Waking up at 4:00am was definitely worth this trip!
In preparation for our trip to Abu Simbel, we made arrangements with our hotel to borrow a pillow, arrange transport that could meet up with the early morning police convoy, and take a continental breakfast (which was packed in a cute little box) with us.
Now police convoys always make me nervous, since it seems to attract more attention than anything else, but having slept most of the ride over to Abu Simbel I had no time to worry.
As soon as I got there I was in awe. Ramses’ narcissism never fails to impress. The monuments erected in his image were larger than life. Next to the main monument was a tomb, lesser in size but equally as impressive, in honour of his favourite bride Nefertari. Why has no man ever loved ME enough to build something in my honour? BAH. Her statues have a great view over Lake Nasr.
The visit wasn’t all that long, but it provided a great photo op and some scenic walks around the site. Snacks were tasty at the on-site eatery and the vendors had <typical> knickknacks and jewellery for sale.
Ten years ago I set a goal to visit 30 countries by my 30th birthday. With no plan or country list to fulfill this goal, I decided to let life take me where it wished.
“See Simi Travel Blog | Adventures of a travel snob“, is just that. The account of an ex-20-something year exploring the world, usually solo, and on a very limited budget.
Every other week I try to tell you a story about the friends, food, fun and fails I’ve had along the way.
