Thirty by 30

Ten years ago I set a goal to visit 30 countries by my 30th birthday. With no plan or country list to fulfill this goal, I decided to let life take me where it wished.  Never did I think it would have me:

- jumping off of mountains in the Tyrol (Austria)

- sleeping at a Nubian homestay with live baby alligators (Egypt), or

- working with indigenous Dayak communities in Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo).

See Simi travel blog | Adventures of a travel snob“, is just that. The account of an ex-20-something year old female trying to explore the world, usually solo, and on a very limited budget.

Every other week I try to tell you a story about the friends, food, fun and fails I’ve had along the way.

What’s a travel snob?

It took me a while to define this. When I use the word “snob”, the first thing that comes to mind is a person who looks down on others and thinks they are better than everyone else. They are unapproachable, and generally very closed minded.

Add the word “travel” and you have a whole new breed of animal. The “travel snob” can also be referred to as the “one upper”. You all have friends like this, and I’m embarrassed to admit that this is what traveling has turned me into.

You went on a safari recently in Kenya? Well not only did your travel snob friend already do this, but (s)he also delivered a lion cub, in the heart of the pride, using nothing else but a  sleeping bag, water bottle and Swiss Army knife.

Loved the resort you went to in St. Lucia? Well your travel snob friend took cooking classes from the resort’s top chef and really learned to be one with the locals.

You get me?

Been to a nice beach like this before? Bet I’ve been to better!

It’s not surprising then that this blog is all about me (but I promise I keep you in mind when writing)!

This page “Thirty by 30” serves as the home page when I am not traveling.

Things to See” (previously “She Saw”) things I’ve seen that I hope everyone else gets to see in their own lifetimes.  It is divided into two pages, from A-M and from N-Z.

Things to Do” (previously “Did Do) experiences that I will never forget and sure you won’t either, and finally…

Social Works” (previously “boulot) details of the sustainable development initiatives I have been involved with along the way.
